Scholarship Mission

To enable mid-career professionals from developing countries to access the latest techniques and knowledge through graduate studies at universities worldwide.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must be Japanese national; must hold a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent university degree) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline; must be in good health with respect to the capacity to be a productive graduate student; must have, by the application deadline, at least 3 years but no more than 25 years of full time paid employment acquired after receiving the first bachelor’s degree; must not be employed by the Government of Japan or its related agencies, including local governments and the Central Bank at the time of application; must not be an Executive Director, Executive Director’s alternate staff, or consultant of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investments Disputes) or have any relatives or in-laws who are employed by the World Bank Group in any capacity; and have not received any scholarship funds from the Government of Japan to help finance a graduate degree.

How Winners are Selected

Selection is based on two qualified assessors independently reviewing each eligible application and scoring the application on a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account three main factors and the degree of cohesion among them: quality of academic experience and recommendations; quality of professional experience and recommendations; and quality of commitment to development.
