Montana operates the “full practice” regulatory structure which means that NPs are not limited in the scope of their practice.

The quality of services rendered by NPs can often be negatively affected by limitations concerning autonomy and functionality. The practice environment in Montana gives NPs more responsibility and a more potent voice in the healthcare team.

NPs are trained to diagnose and manage patients at a level that RNs are not expected to. The full practice structure allows them to employ their knowledge and skills as much as is required.

The National Academy of Medicine is in support of the adoption of the full practice structure in all states. NPs must join in advocating for the implementation of these beneficial structures in all states.
